In the early 1960s, Douglas Taylor Ross played a pivotal role in several foundational works for CAD, to the extent that the term “Computer-Aided Design” is often attributed to him. Ross likely did not fully envision the immense value this technology would accrue. At that time, personal computers were not commonplace, and only large corporations could afford to invest in powerful machines and software development.

Market giants, particularly in the aeronautical and automotive industries, spearheaded the development of proprietary CAD systems for internal use. Companies like Boeing and Renault are notable examples of those that developed their own sophisticated systems during this period.

A significant early example of CAD software from this era was Sketchpad. Developed by Ivan Sutherland in 1963, Sketchpad allowed designers to draw directly on a monitor using a light pen – a precursor to modern graphic tablets and touchscreens.

The Rise of Commercial CAD and Personal Computing

The 1970s saw established companies introduce products that cemented their names in CAD history. For instance, Dassault Systèmes launched its powerful CATIA software during this decade.

However, the true explosion of CAD software occurred in the 1980s, coinciding with the widespread emergence of personal computers. Companies like Apple and IBM worked tirelessly to develop robust computing solutions that became accessible to smaller businesses and individual professionals.

It was in this transformative environment that Autodesk made its groundbreaking move. In 1982, Autodesk introduced its CAD software, initially named MicroCAD, at COMDEX alongside IBM. This application, soon renamed AutoCAD, was designed to run on various operating systems, including Unix and MS-DOS. Autodesk’s strategic decision to leverage the burgeoning IBM PC market made AutoCAD known and highly accessible, marking a monumental step for a relatively new company.

Evolution and Modern Dominance

In that same year, Autodesk streamlined its focus, committing exclusively to AutoCAD for Windows and phasing out support for Unix and MS-DOS.
